by Kozo: Sleazy and without redemption, this Category III costume comedy is so over-the-top that it enters a nearly watchable realm. Yung Hung is the wife who’s tortured into admitting that she offed her well-hung husband (Tommy Wong) in order to consummate her affair with young scholar Lawrence Ng. Said torture involves all sorts of nasty devices designed to get even the toughest person to squeal. Some of the pain-inducing devices are apparently lifted from historical accounts, while others are undoubtedly the product of the filmmakers’ gleefully demented imagination. Since one of the filmmakers is celebrated sleazemeister Wong Jing, it all starts to make sense.
Chinese Torture Chamber Story is one of those films that lives up to its reputation and even surpasses it. A bizarre collection of softcore sex, lame comedy, and absurd plot devices, the film is guaranteed to offend even the most politically incorrect. The screwy goings-on in this flick make Sex and Zen look like the very model of restraint. Case in point, the insane sequence where the legendary Tsui Kam-Kong tries out various unheard of sexual positions while apparently practicing for a flying martial arts tourney. That celebrated scene appeared briefly in director Derek Yee’s film Viva Erotica, and is the centerpiece of this strangely inspired piece of exploitation. This movie will likely offend, disturb, disgust, annoy, or entertain just about anybody who throws it in their VCR. With that in mind, it could probably be considered something of a success. Produced using sets and costumes left over from the Stephen Chiau comedy HAIL THE JUDGE, this Wong Jing production can be accused of a lot of things — but few would call it boring. Particularly memorable is a send-up of the pottery wheel scene in Ghost, accompanied (as in the American film) by “Unchained Melody,” played here on Chinese instruments (after witnessing what goes on here, you’ll never be able to think of that song again without laughing and / or wincing)! Also unforgettable is a sex scene between C-III regulars Elvis Tsui and Julie Lee. Playing martial arts masters, the two engage in wild, gravity-defying sexual stances like “Invincible Mouth,” “Oral Attack,” “Invincible Wheel,” and “Wonder Screw,” with their superhuman pelvic slamming accompanied by video game-style sound FX! Obviously not for all tastes, the film can be marginally enjoyable if approached in the right frame of mind (assuming that is at all possible) but some all-too-serious misogyny, torture, and sexual violence make parts very hard to endure and negatively color the entire experience. Director Bosco Lam went on to write the original story for VIVA EROTICA, and clips from TORTURE CHAMBER appear in that film during a sequence where Leslie Cheung and Law Kar-ying go to the movies. The unrelated (and far less financially successful) CHINESE TORTURE CHAMBER STORY II followed in 1998.

Synopsis:
The film starts with a young woman, the oddly named Little Cabbage (Yvonne Yung Hung, also in the classic “Ancient Chinese Whorehouse”) being discovered with the corpse of her husband, the unfortunate victim of an exploding penis incident. Little Cabbage and a young scholar (Lawrence Ng, “Sex and Zen”) she is accused of having an affair with are dragged before the judge and charged with murder by powerful aphrodisiac. To make them confess, the judge orders a variety of punishments and tortures, starting with some humiliating bare-ass spankings before escalating to fingernail pulling, bloody whippings, and worse. Unfortunately for the persecuted couple they are in fact the victims of a nefarious frame up. The real killers are the son of the judge and the scholar’s wife, who have been conducting a passionate affair as a result of the scholar’s sexual inadequacy. Will justice prevail?
